Things To Consider when beginning your Bath design:
Color Scheme
One of the first things to consider, aside from your budget, is the color scheme. This will help you narrow down choices for everything from wall color to cabinets down to the fixtures and hardware. You can find great color scheme ideas online, or see plenty of examples in our gallery page. If you'd like to try your own color scheme, there are a number of design tools online you can use. We've listed some of the ones we like at the bottom of the page in the links section. One of our favorite resources is kuler.adobe.com, which is great to use if you'd like to come up with your own color scheme or browse others.
Cabinets
The next step is to decide on the vanity and cabinetry. Take the time to look around your bathroom and decide what you need for storage. Will you need extra towel cupboards? Lots of drawers to organize makeup and hair accessories? Do you want extra outlets around the sink for hair dryers and straighteners? Do you keep cleaning products and bathroom supplies on hand that will require extra storage space? The best way to make these decisions is to look around your bathroom, take stock of what you have, and write it down. Then decide how you'll want to organize it.
Fixtures
When considering bathroom fixtures, brands are important. You'll want to know what warranties are offered. Ask yourself, do I need a tub or just a shower? Maybe a deep whirlpool tub is for you. Perhaps a large stand-up shower is more your style. Both design and functionality should be considered. Do you need dual sinks? More than one mirror?
Walls
Wall color is important, but materials are worth consideration too. Paint or tile? Tile is very easy to clean and lasts a long time. Do you want tile walls, or maybe just tile backsplash? What's easier to clean? Remember that bathrooms have a lot of moisture. When thinking about tile, black grout is a great solution since it won't show stains and mildew.
Flooring
Do you like wood or tile floors? How will they fit in with your design? Would you like to step on a heated floor when getting out of the shower?
Windows
If you've always wanted more light in your bathroom, now is the time to consider this. Having windows or skylights installed is much more cost- effective if your bathroom is already being renovated. For privacy you'll also want to consider placement of windows and window treatments.
Countertops
These will be another major part of how your bathroom looks and feels. Color and material should be considered. Do you like tile, granite, or marble?
Ventilation
While this isn't always one of the first considerations, and typically takes a back seat to design, this is one of the most important things you can do in your bathroom. Proper ventilation is important to keep mildew and mold from forming.
Lighting
Lighting adds a lot to how your bathroom feels. Do you want a nice relaxed feel while taking a bath? Recessed lighting with dimmer switches may be for you. If you apply makeup, lighting that mimics natural light is wonderful.
"Extras"
Some extra features to consider for your bath are Heated Towel Racks, Saunas, Jacuzzis, Spas, Fireplaces, Built in seat in the shower (great for shaving legs), Recessed lighting in the shower itself, a men's standing toilet, Heat lamps or hot air vents to make the bathroom nice and toasty.
