Things To Consider when dreaming about your New Kitchen:

Color Scheme

One of the first things to consider, aside from your budget, is the color scheme. This will help you narrow down choices for everything from wall color to cabinets down to the fixtures and hardware. You can find great color scheme ideas online, or see plenty of examples in our gallery page. If you'd like to try your own color scheme, there are a number of design tools online you can use. We've listed some of the ones we like at the bottom of the page in the links section. One of our favorite resources is kuler.adobe.com, which is great to use if you'd like to come up with your own color scheme or browse others.

Cabinets

Cabinets will make up the majority of your kitchen and are a major part of the color pallete. You'll also want to take a look around your kitchen and decide what you need for storage space. Will you want a built in wine rack? Do you have a lot of plates? Consider built in plate holders. Lots of platters? Double cabinets might be a good solution. Center islands are very popular because they create extra work space and storage. The best way to make these decisions is to look around your kitchen, take stock of what you have, and write it down. Then decide how you'll want to organize it.

Appliances

When considering appliances, brands are important. You'll want to know the warranties that are offered. In terms of design, do you like Stainless Steel? Should the refrigerator match the look of your cabinets? Design and functionality should be considered. Do you need a deep sink? Should your refrigerator have an ice-maker or water filter? Do you need a large freezer? Do you prefer a gas or electric stove? Would you like your microwave mounted above the stove to save counter space? While these are some of the most popular features, there are many available. Think about what you'll need to be comfortable in your workspace.

Walls

Wall color is important, but materials are worth consideration too. Paint or Wallpaper? Tile is very easy to clean and lasts a long time. Do you want tile wall or backsplash? What material should be near your stove? Think about splatters, and how easy or difficult it will be to clean them up.

Flooring

Do you like wood floors? How will they fit in with your design? If you like tile, black grout is both attractive and functional because it doesn't show stains from spillage like white grout can. Imagine white grout lines after a glass of red wine spilled on your floor!

Windows

If you've always wanted more light in your kitchen, now is the time to consider this. Having windows or skylights installed is much more cost effective if your kitchen is already being remodeled.

Countertops

These will be another major element of the overall look and feel of your kitchen. Color and material should be considered. Do you like tile or granite, or natural stone? This is one of the things in your kitchen that you'll be seeing and using every day.

Ventilation

While this isn't always one of the first considerations, typically taking a back seat to design, this is one of the most important things you can do in your kitchen. Proper ventilation is important to keep food odors from lingering, especially if you have an open- concept design. While everyone loves smelling food cooking in the kitchen it's another thing to have the scent in the living room the next day. If ventilation isn't an option, ceiling fans can often be an effective alternative. Ventilation should be considered not only over the stove, but throughout the whole room.

Lighting

Lighting dramatically effects how your kitchen feels. Will there be a small breakfast nook in your kitchen? Would you like the lighting to be different over the table? If you like a bright kitchen, more lights are important. If you like a softer feel, recessed or drop lighting can really bring everything together nicely!

"Extras"

Some extra features to consider for your kitchen are frialators, professional grade stoves, built in wine racks, built in cutting boards, plate racks, under sink storage drawers to hold sponges and soap, bar area, and breakfast nooks.
