Our 8 Step GOLD Installation Process
- Old roofing materials are removed and properly disposed of.
- The existing
Barn Board
is re-nailed on. Generally, barn board has become loose from aging. - The entire roof is covered in plywood. In New England homes built before the 1940's have barn board spaced anywhere from ½" to 2" apart. When shingles are placed over existing barn board without a protective layer in between, the nails go into the spaces. Those shingles aren't securely nailed to any underlying material. In bad weather rain can get underneath those shingles, and during high winds can actually be ripped away from the roof. This extra layer is crucial for a well built, element resistant roof.
- The entire roof is covered in tarpaper. When heat escapes and connects with the cool air, it creates moisture between the shingles and underlying material. This causes shingles to rot from underneath. Tarpaper has oil in it which helps to keep the backs of the shingles dry.
- All of the roof edges are trimmed out with 8"
Drip Edge.
Be sure to check with any contractor as to the width they use- the industry standard is only 2". The width is important because it will determine how deeply into the roof the drip edge goes. The further the drip edge lays onto the roof, the better the appearance and weather resistance of the roof. - We install a 36" ice & water shield
along the soffit (bottom roof edges). This is a rubber membrane that prevents Ice Dams
from allowing water into your home. - We install an 18" Ice and Water Shield all the way up the edges of the roof. This goes up the rakes (where the points of the roof go up) to combat wind driven rain that's blowing sideways- in a good New England gale, of course! Check with any contractor- many simply apply the Ice & Water Shield to the bottom roof edges and skip this step altogether.

Caring for your Roof after Installation
The most important thing you can do is cut back tree limbs from your roof. Leaves will collect on the roof. When they begin to decompose, an acid is released that will eat away at the shingles. Trees also prevent the roof from drying quickly, encouraging mildew to form. Also be sure to keep gutters and downspouts clean and free of leaves. In the winter, keep snow away from the bottom of the downspout to allow melting snow to easily flow from the roof out of the gutter.
