Rubber Roofing

APPLICATION: Used for flat or low pitcheddefinition- pitch is a term used for angle of the roof. Low pitched means relatively flat, high pitched means steep. (typically commercial) roofs.

LIFE: Ten to Fifty years, depending on the thickness of the rubber roofing material. (Expect to invest approximately twice as much for material that lasts 5 times longer).

ADVANTAGES: Because rubber is one giant piece of material (as opposed to rolled roofing material) it has no seams. With rolled roofing water can get under the seams- because rubber roofing has no seams it is waterproof.

DISADVANTAGES: Because it can be punctured, rubber roofing should be walked on very carefully, and should be checked at regular intervals. Rubber roofing is also very unattractive, which is another reason you typically only see it on flat roofs.

Rolled Roofing

APPLICATION: Used for flat or low pitcheddefinition- low pitched. (typically commercial) roofs. Rolled roofing is a large pre- rolled sheet of shingles. It's typically used for barns, garages, or sheds.

LIFE: One to Five years.

ADVANTAGES: Expect to pay less than rubber roofing. Rolled roofing can be walked on and maintained easily. This is the lowest cost short term fix available.

DISADVANTAGES: Rolled roofing has a short life span and is not water resistant like rubber roofing.

Asphalt Shingles

APPLICATION: Used for a mild to high pitcheddefinition- high pitched. roof. The majority of homes today have asphalt shingled roofs.

LIFE: Based on the thickness of the shingle, asphalt shingles will last anywhere from twenty to forty years, depending on thickness of shingle and the quality of the granules that coat them. Expect to invest about twenty percent more for a shingle that lasts twice as long.

ADVANTAGES: Asphalt shingled roofs are common, easy to repair, and easy to replace. It's a good option if you're looking for a good balance of quality and initial investment. Asphalt roofs also give your home a good resale value.

DISADVANTAGES: No shingle is completely water resistant, but the higher the pitch of the roof the better. If your roof is flat or low pitched, or your home is close to water, you may want to consider an alternative material.

Cedar Shingles

APPLICATION: Cedar shingles are typically installed on homes close to water, lake side or sea shore homes for example. Salt and excessive moisture decompose asphalt and rust metal.

LIFE: Expect a cedar roof to last thirty to forty years.

ADVANTAGES: Cedar shingles should be considered if you live in close proximity to water. Cedar is the hardest wood (other than oak) and is much more water resistant than asphalt. Homes built 100- 150 years ago still have cedar roofs today.

DISADVANTAGES: Expect to invest more for cedar shingles and labor for maintenance. Cedar is not a common roofing material and it's more difficult to find skilled craftsmen to install it properly.
